Albufeira, Portugal, offers varying surf conditions throughout the year, with the best months typically falling in the winter season when swells are consistent and wave quality is higher. January stands out as the prime month, with 79% ground swells—the highest probability of the year—and a mean swell size of 1.4m, providing solid surfable waves. December follows closely with 68% ground swells and the largest average swell size at 1.5m, making it another excellent month for surfers. February and November also deliver good conditions, with ground swells at 74% and 56%, respectively, though wind conditions are less favorable (71% and 70% bad winds). From March onwards, ground swells decrease while wind swells increase, leading to less consistent wave quality. By April, ground swells drop below 50%, and from May through September, conditions worsen with smaller waves (0.6m–0.9m) and higher wind swell dominance. Summer months like June, July, and August are the least ideal, featuring minimal ground swells (11%–20%) and smaller wave heights, often below 1m. While October shows some improvement with 45% ground swells, it’s still inconsistent compared to winter. Overall, surfers should target December through February for the most reliable swell size and consistency, accepting the trade-off with less favorable winds. The mid-year months are better suited for beginners or those prioritizing calm conditions over powerful waves.
