Bico, Portugal is a reliable surf spot with consistent conditions year-round, but the best months for surfers are clearly from November through March. During this period, ground swell dominates (74-91%), providing powerful, well-organized waves with mean heights between 1.8m and 2.1m, ideal for experienced surfers. December and January stand out as peak months, with the highest swell size (2.0-2.1m) and the most favorable ground swell consistency. However, wind conditions are less ideal, with bad winds (onshore or cross-shore) occurring 69-75% of the time, particularly in winter. Late autumn (November) and early spring (March) offer slightly better compromise conditions—still strong ground swell (74-84%) but with marginally lower wind interference. From April onward, ground swell diminishes significantly, replaced by wind swell, which becomes dominant (58-82% from May to August). Summer months (June-August) are the least favorable, with small swell (1.0-1.1m) and consistently poor wind conditions (87-88% bad winds). September and October mark the transition back to better surf, with ground swell increasing to 46-63% and mean swell height improving to 1.2-1.5m, though winds remain challenging. For surfers prioritizing wave quality, winter months deliver the best performance conditions despite wind drawbacks, while shoulder seasons (late autumn and early spring) provide a balance of decent swell and slightly improved wind odds. Summer is best avoided unless seeking smaller, less predictable waves.
