Costa Nova in Portugal is a consistent surf spot with year-round swell, but the best conditions for surfers are typically found in the winter and early spring months. From November through March, the swell is dominated by powerful ground swells, with percentages ranging from 75% in November to 91% in January. These months also bring the largest mean swell sizes, averaging 2.2m to 2.5m, which is ideal for experienced surfers looking for solid, clean waves. The trade-off, however, is the wind conditions—only about 30-34% of days have favorable offshore or light winds during these months, with stronger onshore winds being more common. April and October can be considered transitional months, where ground swells still dominate around 60-64% of the time, but wind conditions improve slightly compared to winter, with good wind days occurring around 25-33% of the time. Swell size in these months averages around 1.9m, making them a good compromise for surfers who want decent waves without the full intensity of winter conditions. The summer months, from May to September, see a significant drop in ground swell dominance, with wind swells becoming more prevalent (up to 84% in July). Swell size decreases to 1.3m-1.6m, and wind conditions are often poor, with bad winds occurring 75-85% of the time. While there are still rideable waves, these months are less reliable for quality surfing. In summary, the prime window for surfing in Costa Nova is from November to March, when ground swells are strongest, though wind conditions can be challenging. For a slightly more balanced mix of swell and wind, late autumn (October) and early spring (April) offer good alternatives. Summer is the least favorable period due to smaller, wind-driven waves and less consistent conditions.
