Gaztetape, Spain, benefits from consistent swell year-round, with the best conditions typically occurring during the autumn and winter months. From October through February, the spot sees a high percentage of ground swell (65% to 84%) and a solid average swell size ranging from 1.2m to 1.7m, making these months ideal for surfers seeking powerful, clean waves. However, wind conditions during this period are less favorable, with good wind days occurring only 33-34% of the time in October, December, and January, dropping slightly in November and February. The winter months (January and February) offer the largest swells (1.7m mean size) but also the highest likelihood of strong onshore winds. As spring progresses into summer (March to August), ground swell declines significantly, replaced by more wind swell, which becomes dominant from May through August. Swell size also diminishes, averaging just 0.8m in June and July—these months are better suited for beginners or those preferring smaller waves. Wind conditions remain poor through summer, with bad winds prevailing 75-82% of the time. September marks the transition back to better conditions, with ground swell increasing to 47% and mean swell size rising to 1.0m. For experienced surfers, the prime window is October to December, offering a balance of strong ground swell, decent wave height, and slightly better wind odds compared to the deeper winter months. The worst period for quality surf is mid-summer (June-August), when wind swell dominates and wave power drops considerably.
