Roca Loca in Costa Rica is a consistent year-round surf spot with reliable swell, predominantly from ground swells which dominate every month (92-100% occurrence). The best months for surfers balance solid swell size with favorable wind conditions, making December through February prime time. During these months, the mean swell size is around 0.9-1.0m, paired with good wind conditions 57-60% of the time, offering clean, rideable waves. March sees a slight uptick in swell size (1.0m) but worsening winds (only 46% favorable), marking the transition toward less ideal conditions. From April through October, the swell remains strong (1.1-1.3m), but onshore winds become more frequent, with bad wind conditions peaking at 69% in September. November brings a slight improvement in wind quality (49% good), though the swell drops to 1.1m. For the best combination of manageable swell and clean conditions, target December-February when wind interference is lowest and waves are consistently fun-sized. Intermediate surfers may still find decent sessions in the shoulder months (March and November), but mid-year is best left to those comfortable with choppier, wind-affected surf.
