Sylt, Germany, is a surf spot heavily dependent on wind swells, with ground swells being almost nonexistent throughout the year. The best months for surfers are typically late autumn and winter, particularly from October to December, when wind swell probabilities are highest (ranging from 49% to 56%) and mean swell sizes reach around 0.7m. However, wind conditions are overwhelmingly unfavorable, with bad wind conditions exceeding 98% in nearly every month, making clean surf sessions rare. January and February also see decent wind swell activity (51-56%), but the swell size remains modest (0.7-0.8m), and wind quality is still poor. Spring and summer (March to September) offer minimal swell potential, with wind swell percentages dropping below 40% from April onward, combined with consistently weak swell sizes (0.5-0.6m). Surfers should prioritize late fall and early winter for marginally better wave potential, though onshore winds and stormy conditions will often compromise wave quality. The lack of ground swells and persistently bad wind angles make Sylt a challenging spot, requiring patience and a tolerance for less-than-ideal conditions.
