Tocones, located in the United States, offers a mix of ground and wind swells throughout the year, with conditions varying significantly by season. The best months for surfing are typically from October through March, when swell consistency and size are more favorable. During this period, ground swell percentages increase, particularly in October (37%), December (36%), and January (34%), contributing to more powerful and cleaner waves. Mean swell sizes peak in December (1.5m) and remain solid around 1.4m from January to March, offering decent wave heights for surfers. Wind conditions, however, are often challenging, with bad winds dominating most months, especially in December (83%) and January (79%). The least unfavorable winds occur in October (38% good winds) and May (36%), though these months see smaller swells. Summer months (June-August) are less ideal, with swells dominated by wind swell (81-94%), weaker sizes (0.8-0.9m), and still unfavorable wind conditions. September and October emerge as balanced months with improving wind conditions and a return of ground swells, making them good transitional periods. For the best combination of swell size, ground swell contribution, and slightly improved wind odds, late fall to early winter (October-December) is the prime window, despite the prevalent onshore winds. Surfers should prioritize sessions during these months for more consistent waves, though wind conditions will remain a limiting factor year-round.
