Malhao, Portugal, is a consistent surf destination with reliable ground swell throughout the year, though conditions vary significantly by season. The best months for surfing are from October through March, when ground swell dominates (67-92% occurrence) and mean swell sizes range from 1.8m to 2.4m, offering powerful, clean waves ideal for experienced surfers. Winter months, particularly December to February, provide the largest swells (2.3-2.4m) but come with challenging wind conditions, as good winds occur only 24-29% of the time. November and October strike a slightly better balance, with decent swell size (1.8-2.1m) and marginally improved wind odds (27-28% good winds). Spring and summer (April-September) see a steep decline in ground swell (15-65%) and smaller waves (1.3-1.8m), combined with poor wind conditions (good winds only 14-23% of the time). While summer can still deliver rideable wind swells, the waves are generally weaker and less predictable. For optimal performance, advanced surfers should target the winter months, accepting higher wind risks for superior swell, while intermediate riders may prefer the shoulder months of October and November for a slightly more forgiving mix of swell and wind.
