Penascal seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (January - March)
During these months, the South Pacific winter swell is at its peak, delivering consistent, powerful groundswell from the SSW and SW. Average wave heights range from 1.4m to 1.6m with long periods of 13-13.5s, offering solid, rippable waves. The wind, however, is the limiting factor. Predominantly from the S and SSW, it creates onshore conditions that degrade wave quality. The statistical chance of an offshore breeze (from NNW, NW, or W) is slightly higher during this window, reaching up to 2% of the time. When a strong high-pressure system settles over the coast and aligns with a low-pressure trough generating swell, the combination can produce rare, glassy sessions with long, fast walls that make Penascal come alive.
Fair Surf Season (April - May)
Autumn sees the swell energy continue to build, with average heights peaking at 1.7-1.8m and periods holding at 13.6s. The swell direction becomes even more favorable, concentrated heavily from the SSW. However, the wind statistics show that ideal offshore wind occurrence drops to 0%. The onshore flow from the south intensifies, often blowing in the 10-20kph range, leading to bumpy, lumpy conditions for most of the day. The sheer power of the swell is undeniable, but the relentless onshore wind makes it a challenging period for clean surf. Dawn patrol offers the best chance for smoother conditions before the daily thermal gradient strengthens the southerly wind.
Low Surf Season (June - December)
From June through December, Penascal is in a perpetual low season for quality surf. While the South Pacific swell machine keeps pumping with average wave heights of 1.5-1.9m and periods of 12.8-13.2s, the wind remains stubbornly onshore from the S and SSW. Ideal offshore wind occurrences are 0% for every month except a negligible uptick in January-February. The combination of strong, consistent swell and persistent onshore wind means that surfers must be prepared for challenging, often choppy conditions. The rare exception occurs when a subtle land breeze from the east or northeast develops during stable high-pressure periods, but these windows are fleeting and unpredictable. Overall, the surf is consistent but rarely clean, making this a spot for the committed or the desperate.
