Bondi seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - September)

Bondi's most reliable surf is locked into the southern winter and early spring. As the Southern Ocean storm track ramps up and mid-latitude low pressure systems march across the Tasman Sea, this South-Southeast facing beach lights up with a steady diet of S, SSE and SE groundswell. Swell heights average 5-6ft (1.6-1.8m), periods stretch to 9.5-9.7s, and clean offshore winds from the W, WNW, NW and NNW blow 34-37 percent of the time. This is the heart of the season: punchy, rideable surf with the occasional long-period pulse and far fewer onshore sea-breezes.

Fair Surf Season (March - April and October - November)

These transition months offer a mix of late-season groundswell and early-season trade wind energy. The Southern Ocean is still active enough to throw S and SSE swells towards Bondi, but periods are often shorter (8.3-9.4s) and the offshore wind window narrows to 21-34 percent. Expect plenty of rideable waves, though the consistency of truly clean, lined-up surf becomes less certain.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Summer is the low season at Bondi in terms of quality. The average period drops to 8.3-8.8s, afternoon seabreezes from the S/SSE/SE become the norm, and the offshore N/NW wind window shrinks to just 25-27 percent. There is still surf - often fun-size E/ENE/ESE swell in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) range - but it rarely has the power or consistency of winter. Early mornings, before the seabreeze kicks in, are the only time to really score.
