Cables seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - August)

Cables really starts to sing in April as the Southern Ocean storm track ramps up and the mean period climbs from 11.8s in February to 12.7s. Average surf size builds from 2.0m (6.5ft) in April to 2.7m (9ft) by July and August, with the bulk of the swell arriving from the south/southwest window. During this stretch, the percentage of ideal offshore wind (ENE-E-ESE-SE) peaks at 44-48%, especially in April and May, because autumn and winter high pressure systems drift far enough north to park an easterly flow over southwest Australia. When the combination locks in, Cables offers powerful, long-period lefthanders with real depth and push.

Fair Surf Season (March & September - October)

Spring and early autumn are transition periods. The ocean is still full: September averages 2.6m (8.5ft) at 13.0s, and October still averages 2.2m (7ft) with a long 12.8s period. March sees the first serious lengthening of period as autumn lows begin to spin up. However, the wind is ideal only 30-35% of the time in these months, as frontal passages become more frequent and the westerly influence increases. You will need to pick the post-frontal windows when high pressure nudges in from the Bight and turns the wind offshore; those days can equal anything winter has to offer.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Late spring and summer bring the weakest part of the calendar. Average heights fall to 1.8-2.0m (6-6.5ft), periods drop to 11.6-12.1s, and ideal offshore wind encounters shrink to 25-30%. The SW groundswell never disappears completely, but the windows become shorter and more wind-affected by southerly and SSW cross-shore breezes. Aim for early mornings, synoptic setups with high pressure south of Australia, and any passing SSW/SW groundswell that has enough west in it to wrap into the west-facing reef.
