Gnaraloo seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - August)
Gnaraloo's best window runs from May through August, when the Southern Ocean low-pressure train cranks into gear and the average swell period climbs to a powerful 13.8-14.1s. Average heights build into the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range, with a solid share of 5-8ft (1.5-2.4m) groundswell, while the favourable offshore quadrant-WSW through south-delivers ideal conditions 25-35% of the time. This is also when the subtropical ridge sitting south of Australia helps funnel a clean S/SE flow into the coast. The dominant SSW/SW swell direction is not Gnaraloo's dream N/NW window, but the long periods allow that energy to wrap, refract and line up on the exposed NW-facing stretch, producing powerful, rideable waves on the better days.
Fair Surf Season (March - April and September - October)
March and April are classic transition months: average periods build from 12.3s to 13.3s, water temperatures peak near 26.5-26.7°C, and the ideal wind window reaches 19-26%. September and October carry plenty of late-winter/spring size, but the spring pressure gradient tightens, S/SSW wind speeds increase, and ideal wind percentages drop to 11-17%. These months still offer a lot of 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) groundswell, but you need to pick your moments-usually at dawn or when a slow-moving high parks over the Bight and gives Gnaraloo a break from the southerly flow.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
From November through February, Gnaraloo falls into its low season. Average swell periods retreat to 11-11.8s, tropical heat builds, and ideal surf windows drop to just 9-12%. The southern quadrant still pumps out plenty of swell-SSW and SW directions account for most observations-but strong S/SSW winds accompanying the summer pressure gradient make much of it bumpy and hard to surf. Tropical cyclone season can occasionally throw a rare N/NW pulse into the picture, but the statistics show that ideal N/NW swell is almost absent. Expect warm-water, wind-affected conditions with the occasional fun-size window.
