January: Midsummer Lull and the Afternoon Southeasterly

The Southern Ocean still sends pulses of energy toward Jan Juc in January, but it's not a month to be too greedy. Average swell height sits at about 5ft (1.5m) with a period of 11.1s, which is long enough to produce properly powerful surf when the swell lines up. The wave rose is dominated by SSW and SW swells - a combined 74% of all readings - with a further 10% from S/SSE. That matches the beach's SSE-facing exposure and means most of the size is coming from the right direction to wrap into the break.

The issue is wind. Only 20% of January wind observations are ideal, with the dominant SSE (15%), SE (12.4%) and S (12%) flow blowing directly onshore. These are classic summer sea-breeze directions around Torquay. Mornings still see a higher chance of light offshore northerlies, but by midday the sea breeze kicks in and chops up the surface. With air temperatures around 17.8°C, water temperature at 18.2°C and relatively low rainfall of 1.66mm per day, it's a warm, mostly dry month - but expect to pick your dawn sessions carefully.
