Johanna seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - June)

As autumn deepens, the mid-latitude storm track migrates northward and the Southern Ocean cranks into gear. Average surf heights climb from 8ft (2.5m) in April to 9ft (2.7m) by June, while average wave periods sit in the powerful 12.7-12.9s range. More importantly, the wind dial swings in your favor - offshore and cross-offshore N/NE flow peaks at 33-35% of the time during this window. Swell direction is dominated by SW/WSW, exactly what Johanna's south-southwest-facing beach needs. The result is consistent, lined-up, often heavy surf with plenty of dawn-session glass.

Fair Surf Season (March & July - November)

Winter and spring bring the biggest-energy swells of the year, with average heights often 9-10ft (2.7-3m) and periods reaching 13.2s. The flip side is that stronger frontal winds, especially W/SW and WSW, start to muss the surface. Ideal wind percentages drop back to 25-30%, but between cold fronts the Southern Ocean delivers some of the heaviest, most powerful waves of the year. March and November sit on the shoulders: still solid, frequently clean, but a notch less consistent than April-June.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Summer in the Bight is the quietest stretch at Johanna. The subtropical ridge pushes the storm track south, average wave heights ease to 7-8ft (2.3m) and periods shorten to around 11.8s. Daily sea breezes from S/SW/W bring afternoon onshores, and true offshore N/NE wind is scarce - only around 22-25% ideal conditions on average. It is certainly not flat, and early-morning SW groundswell can still produce excellent waves, but surfers need to pick their windows carefully.
