Best Surf Season (April - July)

The autumn-to-winter transition is the true engine of Noosa's surf year. As the subtropical ridge shifts over the southern Coral Sea, strong highs begin to park themselves off eastern Australia and funnel a steady S/SSW/SW/WSW flow across the Sunshine Coast. That offshore breeze is exactly what the north-east-facing points need. Average wave heights of 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) and periods of 8.8-8.9s are not extreme, but consistency is excellent - ideal-wind readings peak at 71-81% through this window. The dominant swell energy comes from E/ESE and SE directions, which refract into Noosa and produce clean, peeling walls from First Point through Granite Bay. This is the most reliable quality of the year.

Fair Surf Season (February - March & August - September)

These are transition months. February and March serve up the largest average swells of the year - up to 6ft (1.8m) - but the wind rose is still divided between summer SE trades and fewer S/SSW/SW/WSW offshore days, so surface texture is a recurring issue. August and September are the opposite: the wind is still frequently offshore, but the average swell height drops to 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) and the period slowly fades from 8.7s to 8.2s as spring approaches. Score these months by picking the early-morning windows and the better E/SE swells.

Low Surf Season (October - January)

The summer monsoon pattern takes over from October through January. The storm track moves poleward and the Coral Sea trade winds weaken, while the prevailing wind becomes NNW, N, NE and ENE. These directions are the worst possible for Noosa because they are both the primary swell direction and the onshore quadrant. Periods drop to 7.7-8.3s, ideal wind falls to 31-37%, and most days produce short-period, bumpy, wind-affected surf. Occasional late-season East Coast Lows or tropical cyclones can spin up a better swell, but without an accompanying S/SSW/SW/WSW change the points stay messy. If you do score a dawn southerly change, the place still works - just expect more drift and chop than in the winter months.
