Best Surf Season (May - August)

The Tasman Sea's winter engine room fires up through May, June, July and August, when North Narrabeen sees its most consistent run of quality surf. Average wave periods climb into the 9.5-9.7s range, average swell heights sit around 5-6ft (1.7-1.8m), and offshore wind windows from W, WNW, NW and NNW peak at 39-44% of the time. Strong Southern Ocean storms and East Coast Lows push S, SE and SSE swell toward the beach, while dry, cool air and water temperatures around 18-19°C keep the sandbars clean. This is the money period for groomed, powerful beach break surf.

Fair Surf Season (March - April, September - October)

Autumn and spring deliver a transition between tropical easterly energy and Southern Ocean groundswell. March and April see average periods build to 9.2-9.4s and offshore wind frequency climb from 25% to 33%. September and October offer similar potential with ideal winds 30-37% of the time, but the return of warmer weather and northeasterly sea breezes means the clean surfing window gets shorter. When a proper SSE swell lines up with a westerly breeze, North Narrabeen still fires.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

From late spring through mid-summer, North Narrabeen falls under the grip of the NE sea breeze. Ideal offshore W/NW/NNW windows drop to just 17-23% of the time as NE and ENE winds dominate the afternoons. Average periods shorten to 8.3-8.8s and average heights settle around 5ft (1.6m). It is not flat, with E, ESE, SE and SSE swells continuing to arrive from trade wind and trough activity, but the lack of groomed conditions pushes the best waves into a short dawn window or right after a southerly change passes.
