Pambula Rivermouth seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (May - July)
May through July is Pambula Rivermouth's golden window. The Southern Ocean fires deep cyclonic lows into the Tasman Sea, lifting the average period past 9 seconds and pushing the wind rose heavily into the SW/WSW quadrant. While the swell direction tilts more southerly, the NE-facing bar still catches the left-over NE component, and the near-constant offshore flow grooms the sandbar better than any other time of year. With ideal conditions running 38-40%, this is the season to book a trip around.
Fair Surf Season (March - April & August - September)
The shoulder months of March-April and August-September deliver a solid mixture of winter power and summer swell. The wind is more variable, and the average period hovers in the 8.6-9.1s range, producing punchy but manageable waves. The ideal window opens 24-35% of the time, offering plenty of opportunity if you're flexible with your session times. These months are great for intermediate surfers wanting less crowd and occasional gems.
Low Surf Season (October - February)
Late spring through summer is the peak of NE groundswell activity, but it's also the peak of NE onshore winds. The rivermouth becomes a battle between abundant, clean-energy swells and chronic chop. Ideal surf days drop to under 25%, with February and December hovering at 20%. If you paddle out, go at crack of dawn when the offshore SSW breeze still has a chance; otherwise, this stretch of the year is best for those happy to hunt around the headlands.
