April: The Winter Engine Starts to Hum

April is when South Point really begins to shine. The average swell height moves up to 2.0m (6.6ft), the period reaches 12.8s, and the direct swell window improves dramatically: WSW contributes 12.1%, W 2.9%, WNW 1.0%, and NW 0.3% - a combined 16.3% from the ideal westerly quadrant. SW still leads the spectrum at 41.9%, but these southwest groundswells now carry more power and period, and the increasingly westerly content fits the WNW-facing exposure better than anything since last winter.

The wind stats are even more encouraging. Ideal surfing conditions peak at 26% this month, the highest of the entire year, with the offshore ENE-E-ESE-SE quadrant present 32.2% of the time. The wind rose is less dominated by a single southerly flow; instead you get a mixture of SE/SSE/S/SW/WNW breezes, which means more chances for a clean offshore dawn before the sea breeze rearranges the surface. With the water still holding at 20.7°C and rainfall rising to 1.38 mm/day, April offers the best combination of quality swell, improving wind, and mild conditions. This is a prime month to book a trip.
