South Wall Ballina seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (June - August)
South Wall Ballina is at its finest during the austral winter. The Southern Ocean storm track shifts northward, and low pressure systems sweeping through the Tasman Sea aim S and SSE groundswell straight into this southeast-facing setup. Average wave periods climb to 9.3-9.6s, pushing the energy well into the powerful range, while highs over the Australian continent drive a steady W to NW airflow that is offshore across the wall. With 48-53% ideal wind frequencies, June through August delivers the most consistent stretch of clean, lined-up surf, even as water temperatures drop to a fresh 20-21°C.
Fair Surf Season (April - May, September - October)
The shoulder seasons offer a bit of both worlds. April and May see increasing S/SSE groundswell and a solid 5-6ft (1.7m) average with periods of 9.2-9.5s. September and October hold onto frequent NNW offshore mornings and lingering S swell, but periods fall back to 8.5-8.8s as E/ESE trade energy creeps back in. Good waves are still regular, but consistency is more mixed and you need to pick the windows between onshore S/SE afternoon breezes.
Low Surf Season (November - March)
Summer and early autumn trade the power of Southern Ocean swells for E and ESE trade windswell. Water warms to 23.5-25.4°C, but onshore E, SE and SSE winds become increasingly frequent, especially through February and March. Periods slip below 9s, and clean conditions are often limited to the early morning before the seabreeze wrecks the surface. Tropical cyclones and east coast lows can occasionally fire big E/SE swell, but the wind usually spoils the quality.
