January: Summer Size with a Dawn Patrol Attitude

January is classic Perth summer - the Southern Ocean storm track has retreated toward Antarctica, but Trigg still sees a surprising amount of long-period groundswell. The average wave height sits around 6ft (1.9m) with a period of 11.6s, and much of the energy arrives in the 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft) range. The swell direction is almost locked into the SSW/SW quadrant, with SSW at 33.7% and SW at 47.5%; while SSW is a little more southerly than the ideal SW-WSW window, it still wraps efficiently into the west-facing point. The limiting factor is wind: ideal offshore flow from NE, ENE, E and ESE occurs only 25% of the time. The SSW/S wind pattern takes over during the day, creating bumpy afternoon surfaces. Air temperatures average a warm 22.9°C, water sits at 21.8°C, and rainfall is low, so the sets are there - you just have to be in the water early before the sea breeze writes off the afternoon.
