June: Maximum Offshore Flow

June is statistically the cleanest month of the year, with 50 percent ideal wind. The synoptic regime is locked into winter: SW through W winds account for 43.9 percent of the total (SW 12.8 + WSW 15.4 + W 15.7), and the persistent summer trades have almost completely disappeared. The swell is also at its winter peak-average height 6.2ft (1.9m) with a healthy 9.7s period and plenty of energy in the 4-8ft (1.2-2.4m) range. However, the directional distribution is heavily weighted to the south: SSE (17.7), S (16.7), and SE (12.7) dominate, while the ideal NNE-NE-ENE-E sector is only 15.2 percent. This is the trade-off: maximum clean surface, but fewer waves from the most favorable direction. The S/SSW swell does wrap into the breakwall though, and with the offshore winds grooming it, the quality can be excellent. Water temp drops to 20.0°C, air averages 14.6°C, and you'll want a steamer. June is the month for dawn-patrol glass with winds straight out of the west.
