Best Surf Season (April - September)
As the Southern Ocean roars to life in autumn and winter, Two Mile/Easter Reef comes alive. The mean swell height climbs to 9-10ft (2.7-3.1m) with average periods reaching 12.7-13.0s, putting the spot firmly in the powerful, long-period groundswell category. The dominant SW and WSW energy is generated by a relentless train of extratropical cyclones and cold fronts sweeping below Australia, and because the break faces due south, this window delivers the sturdiest, most consistent waves of the year. Crucially, the same months see the highest percentage of ideal offshore winds - NNW, NW and N flow arrives behind fronts and around strong high-pressure ridges, giving clean walls and proper hollow sections. April and September are the gates, while May through August are the heart of the season.
Fair Surf Season (March, October & November)
Transitional months around the winter peak offer a mixed bag. March is reawakening autumn: average swells nudge up to around 8-9ft (2.4-2.7m), periods hit 12.3s, but offshore winds only blow 27% of the time. October and November still see a solid SW/WSW base from lingering winter lows, yet the atmosphere becomes more unstable and sea breezes return; ideal wind drops to 32% then 26%. On the right days these months can provide fun, rippable 5-8ft (1.5-2.4m) surf, but you need to pick your windows carefully.
Low Surf Season (December - February)
Summer is the classic low season at this south-facing reef. The Southern Ocean storm track retreats poleward, average swell heights drop to around 8ft (2.4m), and average periods fall to 11.6-11.8s. The bigger issue is wind: ideal offshore flow only manages 22% of the time, with persistent SE through SW sea breezes ruining the clean shape on many afternoons. The water is warmest at 17-18.5°C and the air often pleasant, but the quality is inconsistent. Still, early-morning long-period SW groundswell under light N/NW winds can produce surprisingly good summer sessions at Two Mile/Easter Reef.
