Ulladulla Bommie seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (April - September)

Ulladulla Bommie is a deep-water, southeast-facing reef that feeds on Tasman Sea energy, and the strongest, cleanest windows arrive from autumn through spring. During April through September, the subtropical high shifts north and the westerly wind belt strengthens over southern Australia. East Coast Lows and Southern Ocean fronts are more frequent, pumping long-period S, SSE and SE swell along the New South Wales South Coast. Average periods climb from 9.0s up to a winter peak of 9.5s in July, while ideal offshore wind days (N/WNW/NW/NNW) occur 45-53% of the time. Water temperatures cool from 20.9°C to 16.0°C, but these cooler months produce the Bommie's most consistent and powerful reef surfing.

Fair Surf Season (March & October)

March and October are transition months. The Tasman is still loaded with S/SSE groundswell-March holds 54% of swell from the optimal ESE/SE/SSE/S window, and October still sees powerful S/SSE contributions-but periods are a touch shorter and wind is less reliable. Warm water in March (21.7°C) and spring sunshine in October make these pleasant months, yet the quality window is narrower. Nevertheless, an early or late-season East Coast Low can serve up some of the best swells of the year.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

The summer months are Ulladulla Bommie's low season for consistency. The South Pacific High drifts north, pushing the storm track away from southeastern Australia, and the prevailing NE/ENE trade-wind belt supplies short-period windswell with average periods of only 7.9-8.4s. NE/NNE winds are dominant and onshore sea breezes kick in almost daily. While the average swell height remains a deceiving 5.5-6ft (1.7-1.8m), much of that energy is poorly aimed E/NE swell. Quality still arrives when a summer East Coast Low or tropical low drifts south and a morning N/NW offshore window lines up with S/SSE swell, but the consistency is low.
