Best Surf Season (April - September)

Woolamai is a south-facing stretch of beach on Phillip Island that relies almost entirely on Southern Ocean groundswell. The best, most powerful waves arrive from the S and SSW quadrants, while the dominant SW and WSW swells wrap into the beach and add plenty of extra size and consistency. From April through September, the austral autumn and winter storm track is in full swing. Average swell heights climb to 1.6-1.7m (5-6ft), average periods stretch from 12.0 to 12.6s, and the wind rose swings hard toward NW and NNW, giving Woolamai clean offshore or cross-offshore conditions for long stretches. This is the heavy, consistent, well-groomed season - just pack a thick wetsuit for water temperatures that drop to 13.3-14.7°C.

Fair Surf Season (March, October - November)

The shoulder months can still produce excellent waves, but consistency starts to drop off. March is a warm-water bonus month with the average period jumping to 11.9s and clean conditions improving to 25% of the time. October holds plenty of long-period SW groundswell, but returning afternoon seabreezes push the ideal wind percentage back down to 32%. By November, the Southern Ocean storm track is retreating, average periods fall to 11.5s, and SE-SSE onshore winds become more frequent. If you can time a solid S-SSW swell with a morning NW-NNW offshore, these months deliver; otherwise the charts get more uncertain.

Low Surf Season (December - February)

Summer is Woolamai's least reliable season for quality. The average height still sits around 1.5m (5ft) and the period hovers near 11.1s, so there is usually some swell in the water, but the wind is favourable only 19-20% of the time. Daily heating kicks in a strong SSE, SE and S seabreeze that blows straight into the south-facing beach and chops up the waves by midday. Early mornings under N and NW offshore winds are the only consistent clean window, making summer a classic dawn-patrol season. Water temperatures are pleasant at 16.7-19.2°C, but expect more frustration than perfection.
