Best Surf Season (May - August)

Barra da Tijuca faces due south, so it lives for the long-period South Atlantic swells that roll in during the austral autumn and winter. From May through August, the average surf size climbs to about 4ft (1.2-1.3m) and periods push into the 10.8-11.1s range. This is when cold fronts and extratropical cyclones track farther north through the South Atlantic, firing S and SSE swell into the Rio coastline. The wind regime also becomes more favorable, with 53-59% of readings ideal for surfing. Early mornings are often glassy with offshore N/NW flow before the sea breeze builds. This is the money window for clean, powerful surf on the sandbars.
