August: Bigger, But the Trades Return

August is a transitional late-winter month at Guarita. Average swell height 1.7m (5.5-6ft) and period 9.2s still provide serious waves, but ideal wind drops to 46% as the trade wind regime strengthens. The wave direction profile has a strong ENE signal at 18.7%, followed by E 14.8%, S 13.3%, SE 12.8%, SSE 12.4%, ESE 12.2%, SSW 4.2%, and NE 3.8%. The east quadrant delivers plenty of windswell and the S/SSW swells are still in the water, so there is almost always something to surf. On the wind side, NE increases to 15.4% and NNE to 13.2%, while SSW in the afternoon sea breeze direction is 10.4% and SW 8.6%. Offshore NW/NNW flow is less consistent than in June-July, with NW 4.5% and NNW 8.9%, but still enough for morning sessions. Expect punchy, sometimes contesty conditions in the 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) range with occasional 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) groundswell peaks.
