Itapeva • Surf Spot Statistics

Itapeva sits on Brazil's south coast with an east-southeast exposure, a setup that is all about angles. It wants swell from the E, ESE, SE and SSE quadrant, and it hates onshore wind from those same directions. The seasonal rhythm of the South Atlantic drives everything: a summer trade-wind machine that stacks up short-period, often bumpy waves, and a winter storm track that sends longer-period groundswell into the coast with cleaner offshore flow from the W, WNW, NW and NNW.

Best Surf Season (May - July)

This is the heart of the South Atlantic winter season. Average swell heights hover around 1.6-1.7m (5-6ft), average periods climb to 9.4-9.8s, and the percentage of ideal wind is the highest of the year at 36-40 percent. Cold fronts marching northeast out of Argentina bring pre-frontal NW to NNW offshore winds, while developing South Atlantic cyclones generate powerful E through SSE groundswell. The water cools to 16-20°C, but the trade-off is cleaner, more organised waves at Itapeva. This is the window when the spot really fires.

Fair Surf Season (April, August - September)

April is the transition month where the summer trade-wind lid starts to lift: the period jumps to 9.1s and the ideal wind percentage reaches 31 percent. August and September hold plenty of size - average swells of 1.7-1.8m (5.5-6ft) - but the NE trades are rebuilding, so the percentage of ideal wind drops back down to 20-30 percent. Surf quality becomes a battle between solid groundswell and afternoon onshore wind. Early mornings and frontal passages provide the best windows.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

During late spring and summer, the South Atlantic subtropical high intensifies and the NE trade winds dominate. Average periods sink to 8.2-8.6s, which favours short-period windswell over true groundswell, and the onshore E, ESE, SE and SSE wind components become far more regular. The ideal wind percentages bottom out - only 16 percent in October and November, 19 percent in December - and while there are still fun waves, they are often sectiony and wind-affected. February and March are the pick of the low season because the SE swell spectrum is more consistent and ideal wind percentages climb to 28-29 percent, but Itapeva is never as good as it is in the autumn and winter months.
