Best Surf Season (May - August)

If you chase clean, consistent waves at Praia do Silveira, the winter months of May through August are your best bet. As the South Atlantic high migrates northward and the polar front pushes low-pressure systems across Uruguay and southern Brazil, the average wave period jumps from 8.0-8.6s in summer to 9.2-9.6s. This is the real groundswell window: cold fronts and intense cyclones generate S, SSE, SE and E swell that wrap into the east-southeast-facing beach. Better yet, the post-frontal westerly flow delivers exactly what Silveira needs-offshore and cross-offshore winds from WSW, W, WNW and NW. Ideal wind percentages climb to 31-42 percent in May-July, while water temperatures remain a crisp 17.6-21.2°C (63.7-70.2°F). Expect consistent 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) surf with solid 1.5-2m (5-6ft) sets on the best days.

Fair Surf Season (April and September - October)

April is the transition month when the winter swell machine starts spooling up; periods average 9.0s and 30 percent of the time winds are favorable. The first true S and SSE groundswell pulses begin to penetrate the coast, and the trade-wind chop starts to break down. September is the opposite transition: it produces the highest average swell height of the year at 1.5m (5ft), with a real slug of 1-2.5m E/ESE energy, but the springtime heating strengthens the onshore flow, dropping ideal wind time to 22 percent. October still has plenty of E/ESE swell, yet only 19 percent ideal wind. These months are for the patient surfer who can read the daily wind maps and pick off the westerly windows.

Low Surf Season (November - March)

From late November through March, the South Atlantic high takes full control and locks in the warm-season trade wind regime. The NE and NNE winds become relentless, blowing cross/onshore at Silveira, while the swell reverts to short-period, locally generated ENE/E/ESE wind swell. Average wave heights hover around 1.2-1.3m (4ft) and average periods fall to 8.0-8.6s. There are still rideable, fun-sized waves-especially when a distant frontal passage angles some SE swell in-but they are often lumpy, wind-blown and less powerful. Water temperatures are a warm 23-25.7°C (73.4-78.3°F), and the lack of wetsuits is nice, but the surf quality is mostly small and unruly. If you have to surf, target late March, when the first autumn cold fronts begin to sneak north.
