Rosa seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (May - August)

May through August is prime time at Rosa. As the South Atlantic subtropical high begins to drift north and mid-latitude frontal systems drive through the region, the average wave period climbs to 9.2-9.6s and offshore wind windows open up 42-56% of the time. The swell window lights up with energy from E/ENE through SE, producing clean, lined-up waves in the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range, with bigger pulses pushing 6-8ft (1.8-2.4m) as winter progresses. Cold fronts bring not only S/SE swell but also those crucial W to NW offshore winds between systems. This is the season to plan a trip.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

April and September serve as transitional months. In April, summer trades are fading and winter frontal systems are just ramping up; 40% ideal winds and a 9.0s average period mean plenty of clean days between the onshore pulses. September is similar but more powerful - the average swell height peaks at 1.5m (5ft) and the E-ESE window is filled with juice, yet only 31% of winds favor clean conditions, making it more hit-or-miss. When the offshore W/NW wind aligns with those stronger E/SE swells, Rosa can turn on in a serious way.

Low Surf Season (October - March)

From October through March, the South Atlantic subtropical high re-establishes its grip and NE trade winds dominate the coastline. The average wave period drops to 8.0-8.6s, ideal wind percentages fall to 23-32%, and the short-period E/ESE swell that does arrive is often lumpy or chopped up by onshore/cross-shore winds. It is not a total write-off - there are still fun, rippable 2-4ft (0.5-1.2m) waves, especially on dawn patrol before the sea breeze kicks in - but consistency and quality are far below the winter standard. If you are chasing clean, powerful surf at Rosa, aim for the cold season.
