Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (June - August)
The Australian winter delivers the most consistent window of opportunity at Caloundra. As the subtropical ridge shifts north, the persistent SE trade winds ease, and we see a marked increase in the frequency of westerly offshore winds. Swell energy remains reliable, with average wave heights between 1.2-1.4m and periods typically in the 8-second range, providing punchy, rideable waves. The combination of clean offshore wind and east to southeast groundswell creates the most favorable conditions for this southeast-facing beach.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & September - October)
During the spring and autumn transitions, Caloundra experiences a mix of conditions. The trade winds are still present but not as dominant, and we see occasional cold fronts sweeping across the Tasman Sea that deliver pulses of longer-period swell from the southeast. April and May offer the largest average swell heights (up to 1.5m) but with onshore wind still a factor. September and October see improving wind percentages as spring westerlies become more common, but the swell heights begin to drop off. These months require careful timing to catch the good windows.
Low Surf Season (November - March)
The summer months are dominated by the entrenched southeast trade wind regime. Onshore winds from the E through SE quadrant blow over 70% of the time, chopping up the surf. Although the east-facing points can pick up fun waves, the exposed Caloundra beachfront sees mostly messy, short-period windswell. Average wave heights are around 1.3-1.5m but the average period drops to 7-8 seconds, and the ideal offshore wind window shrinks to less than 15% in the core summer months. The rare day when a westerly buster arrives can produce clean conditions, but these are the exception rather than the rule.
