The setup is unique: a blend of jetties and a protected river mouth sandbank that can produce a range of conditions, giving advanced riders the flexibility to pick their poison. The main attraction here is a fast, left-hand wave that detonates over an uneven, shallow reef. These are not forgiving waves—they are explosive, hollow, and require precise timing and commitment. The ideal swell direction is southwest, though south and west swells also deliver. A modest 2-foot (0.6-meter) swell is enough to get things firing, and the wave handles all tide stages—low, mid, and high—though each brings its own hazards. Best Surf Season (April - August)

Let's be real: El Faro is a spot where the South Pacific constantly serves up a huge plate of swell, but most of it gets delivered to the wrong address. The wave roses show a near-permanent diet of SSW/SW/WSW groundswell, with average heights between 2.4m and 2.8m (8-9ft) at long periods of 12-13s. The catch? The beach faces NNW, so that southern-hemisphere westerly energy is largely shadowed by the coast. The window that actually lines up for El Faro is N/NNW/NW swell, and that window, while never huge, is widest from April through August. During this stretch the WNW/NW/NNW share of the swell rose roughly doubles-to-triples compared to summer, periods hold in the 12.6-13.0s range, and offshore S/SSW winds still blow 20-26% of the time. May and June are the pick months for a heaving, lined-up El Faro.
