Best Surf Season & Climatology

Best Surf Season (April - July)

As the Northern Hemisphere spring sets in, Costa Azul hits its prime. The Pacific high tightens its grip, ushering in consistent offshore breezes from the west to northwest—perfect for grooming the predominant south swell that travels thousands of miles from the Southern Ocean. Average wave heights climb to a fun 1.0-1.2m, while periods hover in the powerful 13-14 second range, yielding punchy, well-shaped waves that reel down the beach. This is the sweet spot where swell size, wind quality, and water temps align for peak surfability.

Fair Surf Season (March, August - October)

The shoulder months still offer plenty of waves, but conditions become more variable. March sees a rise in long-period swell as the South Pacific gears up, but winds can be a tick more inconsistent. Late summer into early fall (Aug-Oct) holds onto solid south swell energy (1.1-1.2m averages) but the trade wind influence begins to creep in, decreasing the percentage of offshore wind days. You'll still score clean sessions, especially in August, but expect more mixed conditions with occasional onshore slop.

Low Surf Season (November - February)

Winter brings a shift in the swell window. While the Southern Hemisphere is still active, the dominant storm tracks weaken, and the average swell height drops to 0.8m. More importantly, the region becomes susceptible to northerly swell from mid-latitude fronts, which doesn't wrap as efficiently into the east-southeast facing beach. Wind patterns are less reliable, with the percentage of ideal offshore wind falling to 69-73%. The result: smaller, less consistent surf with a higher chance of onshore wind ruining the session. However, when a solid south swell sneaks in under a high-pressure ridge, the few days of fun-sized, groomed waves make it worthwhile.
