Bejuco seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (December - March)
For Bejuco, the best surfing of the year is driven by the dry-season setup. High pressure across the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean strengthens the offshore N to NE flow, giving this south-southwest-facing beach clean, groomed surfaces. The average swell is smaller during these months, generally 3-3.5ft (0.9-1.1m), but the wave period is a long 12-13.5s and the swell is almost exclusively SSW/SW. With low rainfall, strong tropical warmth, and a much higher percentage of offshore wind windows, December through March delivers the most consistent and user-friendly surf of the year.
Fair Surf Season (April - May & October - November)
These transitional months represent the middle ground at Bejuco. The swell begins to build in April as the first southern-hemisphere groundswells arrive, and it remains active through May and again in October and November as the ITCZ shifts. The average height is bigger, often reaching 4-4.5ft (1.2-1.4m), but the weather becomes more fickle: rainfall increases, the prevailing winds turn more S/SW, and the percentage of ideal wind drops. Early mornings can still offer clean N/NE offshore conditions, but you have to work around tropical showers and afternoon sea breezes.
Low Surf Season (June - September)
June through September is not a flat season at Bejuco. In fact, it contains the largest SSW/SW groundswells of the year, with a good share of 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) and occasional 6.5-8ft (2-2.5m) sets. However, the mid-year rainy season brings persistent cloud, heavy rain, and a prevailing light S/SW onshore flow that directly opposes the ideal offshore wind direction. As a result, this is the low season for surf quality: plenty of power, but a lower percentage of clean, well-shaped waves. The smart play is to target the short dawn offshore windows between tropical waves, when the same SSW swell can be genuinely firing.
