Boca Damas

Tucked away near the sleepy town of Damas, Boca Damas is a raw, wild rivermouth setup that delivers a dynamic mix of wave types. Access is half the adventure—most surfers opt for a boat ride from the bustling city of Quepos, sidestepping a long, arduous trek through strong currents and the occasional crocodile sighting. The payoff? A stretch of open beach where the sand meets the sea in a pristine, surf-friendly embrace. The surf here is big and bold, often larger than at nearby spots, offering long, fast, and sometimes hollow lefts alongside punchier rights. Best on a south swell, waves can hold size up to 2 feet (0.6 meters), with north wind providing the cleanest shape. Tides play a crucial role; the incoming tide tends to unlock the most consistent and rewarding sessions, but the wave works across low, mid, and high stages. This is expert territory—demanding currents, shifting peaks, and the lurking presence of crocodiles make it a place that rewards respect and experience. Best Surf Season (April - September)

Boca Damas is, first and foremost, a south-southwest swell magnet. During the northern-hemisphere spring and summer, the southern-hemisphere winter storm track becomes active across the South Pacific, and the resulting long-period SSW and SW groundswells travel thousands of miles into this SSW-facing corner of Costa Rica. Average wave heights climb to 1.2-1.4m (4-4.6ft) from April onward, with a healthy share of 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) pulses between May and August. Periods sit in the powerful 13-14s range, so the beach sees steep, organized lines rather than wind chop. The Intertropical Convergence Zone drifts north during these months, increasing humidity, rainfall and cloud, and onshore S/SW flow often rules the afternoon. Still, early-morning offshore windows from N, NNE, NE and NNW offer the cleanest and arguably best surf of the year.
