January: Trade-Wind Peak and Shoulder-High Winter Swell

January is one of the strongest months of the year at Isla Uvita. The North Atlantic subtropical high is pumping at full strength, driving a steady stream of ENE swell that accounts for 74% of all wave energy. Add in the NE at 18% and the NNE at 6%, and the incoming swell is overwhelmingly from the favorable NNE-through-E quadrant. Average heights hit 4.6ft (1.4m), with the dominant band in the 3-5ft (1-1.5m) range and a strong secondary push into the 5-6.5ft (1.5-2m) class, so expect solid shoulder- to head-high surf. The average period of 8.4s keeps it punchy and rideable rather than fat or weakly lined up.

The main challenge is surface texture. The trades blow from the eastern quadrants much of the time, and for a northeast-facing beach those are onshore or cross-onshore. However, the wind is ideal 43% of the time, with the offshore SSW-W sector showing up most often when weak cold fronts or tropical troughs mess with the trades. Dry-season weather keeps rain at 4.15 mm/day, air temps around 23.5°C, and water temps at 27.5°C, so the water is bathwater warm and the air is comfortable. January is peak season in every sense.
