While it flies under the radar on most days, when the swell pulses, you’ll find a dedicated crew of locals and traveling surfers sharing long, sweeping right-handers beneath a backdrop of dramatic cliffs and turquoise water. The scenery alone is worth the trip—bring a camera for the off-hours. The magic here is driven by southern hemi groundswell, with southwest angles delivering the cleanest shape. Optimal wave heights hover around 3 feet (1 meter) as energy wraps across a mixed reef-and-sand bottom, peeling predominantly to the right. Those who dial in their positioning can unlock extended runners, making this a rewarding session for intermediate surfers—though the shifting bathymetry can throw occasional curveballs. Tides are forgiving; low, mid, and high all produce ridable waves, but a west wind is your best friend for smoothing out the faces. On smaller days, the inside beach break offers a forgiving playground for beginners looking to build confidence. Best Surf Season (May - September)

Pan Dulce sits on an east-facing stretch of Costa Rican coastline, which means the dream scenario would be pulses of NE, ENE, E, ESE or SE swell wrapping into the break. In reality, the swell window is dominated by SSW and SW energy year-round, so the 'best' months are simply the ones with the most size and power. From May through September the average swell height climbs to 1.1m (3-4ft) with periods between 12.7 and 14.1s, and offshore flow - from SW, WSW, W, WNW and NW - is present 76-86% of the time. That combination produces the most consistent, rippable surf the spot sees, even if the direction is not perfect. Expect 3-5ft (1-1.5m) waves on the better days, with occasional 5-6ft (1.5-1.8m) sets, especially in June and August.
