Pavones seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (March - May)
As the tropical dry season gives way to the early green season, Pavones gets the best combination of size and clean wind. Average swell heights climb from around 2.6ft (0.8m) to 3.6ft (1.1m), while average swell periods peak at a powerful 14.1s in April and May. Although the wave rose is stubbornly dominated by long-period SSW/SW groundswell rather than the textbook W/NW angles, the long intervals allow that energy to wrap effectively into the WNW-facing point. Offshore flow from the E/ESE/SE/SSE sector is present 31 to 37 percent of the time, enough to keep the surface glassy on many mornings. This is the window when Pavones delivers its classic long lefts in the 3-5ft (0.9-1.5m) range.
Fair Surf Season (June - October)
The wet season brings more size but more inconsistency. Average swell heights hold at 3.6ft (1.1m) and periods remain in the powerful 12.9-13.8s range, but the ITCZ settles overhead, driving precipitation to 8-9mm per day and strengthening the onshore W/NW flow. Ideal surfable wind drops to 20-29 percent, so waves are often lumpy and rain-affected. There are still excellent sessions, especially when tropical waves align the SSW/SW groundswell with a morning offshore E/SE wind, but you have to work hard for them.
Low Surf Season (November - February)
From late autumn into the core dry season, the swell dials back. Average open-ocean swell drops to 2.3-3.3ft (0.7-1.0m) and the wave direction locks back into a very tight SSW window. The upside is dry, clean, warm conditions: lower rainfall, water temperatures around 28-29°C, and light winds. Pavones becomes a small-wave longboard paradise, best suited to high-performance groveling and logging, while shortboarders wait for the larger pulses that build through late February and March.
