Playa Cocles seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (December - March)

Playa Cocles is a classic Caribbean trade-wind spot, and its northeast-facing exposure lines up perfectly with the relentless NE swell machine. From December through March, the North Atlantic subtropical high strengthens-often during a positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation-and sends a steady stream of N, NNE, NE and ENE windswell into the bay. Average wave heights climb to 1.0-1.2m (3-4ft) with periods of 7.7-8.2s, providing punchy, rideable surf. Equally important, the wind is ideal 42-50% of the time, with SW and WSW offshore breezes grooming the faces. Air temperatures sit in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and water temperatures hover near 28°C. This is the most reliable window for clean, rippable waves.

Fair Surf Season (April, July, August, November)

The shoulder months still offer plenty of waves, but consistency and wind quality take a step back. April and November are transition months, with the NE trade swell starting to weaken or rebuild, while July and August can produce surprisingly solid surf thanks to strong trade winds and average periods reaching 7.6-8.3s. The catch is that ideal offshore wind frequencies drop to 28-39%, and cross-shore NW/NNW flow becomes more common. If you time the dawn patrol windows carefully, these months can still deliver chest-high peaks and warm 28-29°C water, especially when a tropical wave or passing low pressure adds extra pulse.

Low Surf Season (May, June, September, October)

The prolonged wet-season pattern and slack pressure gradients across the Caribbean make May, June, September and October the least reliable months at Playa Cocles. Average swell heights slump to 0.6-0.9m (2-3ft), periods drop to 6.6-8.0s, and ideal offshore wind frequency falls to 20-28%. September and October are the absolute low point, with small, short-period and often messy surf. Even so, a passing cold front or tropical disturbance can briefly re-energize the NE trades for a few days, turning Playa Cocles into a playful, waist-to-chest-high beach break.
