Best Surf Season (November - April)

Playa Langosta is at its absolute finest when the dry season takes hold from November through April. As the Aleutian Low spins up across the North Pacific, a steady stream of extratropical storms sends WNW and NW swell racing down the coast of Central America. At the same time, the strengthened pressure gradient between the North American high and the equatorial heat low locks in the NE trade winds, delivering offshore breezes that groom the west-facing sandbars for long, clean sessions. With average wave heights of 1.3m (4.3ft) and periods ranging from 11.5s to 14.1s, the spot gets a consistent diet of powerful, rippable surf. The winter months also bring the driest weather of the year, with sunny skies, warm air temps around 27-29°C, and water temps holding in the comfortable upper-20s range.

Fair Surf Season (May - August)

As spring turns to summer, the North Pacific quietens down and the baton passes to the South Pacific. From May through August the swell window shifts to the SSW/SW corridor, with average periods staying in the 13.3-14.2s range and wave heights rising to 1.4-1.5m (4.6-4.9ft). This is the green season in full swing: rain showers are frequent, humidity builds, and the water temperature climbs to 29.5°C. The winds become lighter and more variable as the ITCZ flexes its muscles, although the trades never fully disappear. July stands out as a prime window, with ideal winds clocking in at 79% while the SSW swell remains solid. Still, outside of a few standout days, surf quality now comes with more rain-dodging and patience required.

Low Surf Season (September - October)

The most challenging stretch of the year at Playa Langosta runs from September through October, when the heart of the rainy season sits directly overhead. The ITCZ produces daily convection, rainfall peaks at 8.76-9.07mm/day, and the steady trade-wind regime dissolves into a chaotic mix of light onshore and variable winds. The swell itself is still respectable - average heights hold at 1.5m (4.9ft) with 12.9-13.1s periods and a strong SW component - but the surfaces are frequently choppy and the wind is deemed ideal only 51-55% of the time. It's not a flat season, but it is a season where you have to work for your waves, trading clean morning glass for tropical showers, humidity and sub-par wind conditions more often than not.
