Best Surf Season (July-August and November-December)

Playa Ostional's surf year is defined by the tug-of-war between the northeast trade-wind regime and the southern-hemisphere groundswell engine. The most complete conditions fall in two windows: July-August, when the average swell sits at 1.5m (5ft) with 13.3-13.5s periods and over 87% of waves arrive from the ideal SSW/SW window, and November-December, when the trades rebuild for a clean offshore flow while the swell direction is still favourable enough to produce powerful, lined-up surf. July is the pick of the year with a 62% ideal-wind score.

Fair Surf Season (April-June and September-October)

April through June sees the southern-hemi swell machine spin up to full power, with average periods reaching 14.1-14.2s and SSW dominance above 70%, but the wind becomes lighter and more variable as the ITCZ moves north, trimming the percentage of clean conditions. Conversely, September-October has the most consistent swell - over 95% from the SSW/SW quadrant - but onshore SSW/SW/WSW/W winds reach their highest frequency and rainfall peaks, making surface texture the main issue. These months can fire, but you have to pick your windows.

Low Surf Season (January-March)

The core dry season is the low season in relative terms. Average wave height still holds around 4ft (1.3m), but the swell direction becomes more mixed; only 48-72% of the wave energy arrives from the optimal SSW-W window, and average period drops to 11.5-13.2s. The strong NE trades are superb for a groomed, offshore surface, though the mix of N/NE windswell and NW/N groundswell rarely allows the kind of consistent, long-period south swell that makes this southwest-facing beach fire. It is a clean and forgiving period, perfect for longboarders and beginners, but less consistent for serious performance surfing.
