Best Surf Season (December - April)
The dry season delivers the most consistent combination of rideable swell and workable wind. As the Intertropical Convergence Zone retreats south, the northeast trade winds strengthen and blow offshore out of the NNE/NE/ENE quadrant, grooming the steady long-period SSW/SW groundswell into clean, rippable walls. Average wave heights sit in the 1.0-1.2m (3-4ft) range, but with periods of 12-14s the waves still carry plenty of punch. These months also bring the lowest rainfall of the year, making it far easier to find a truly glassy dawn session.
Fair Surf Season (May - August)
Southern Hemisphere winter storms fire up and the average swell height climbs to 1.3-1.4m (4-4.5ft), with a growing percentage of 1.5-2m (5-6.5ft) sets. The swell direction remains locked in the SSW/SW sweet spot, and wave periods hover around 13-14s, so the raw power is excellent. The trade-off is a more active ITCZ, bringing higher humidity, frequent tropical showers, and a solid increase in onshore SW/W winds. Ideal surf windows drop to roughly 22-25% of the time, making early morning offshore windows the prime time to strike.
Low Surf Season (September - November)
This is the heart of the green season, when onshore wind and heavy rainfall dominate. While swell energy remains surprisingly healthy at 1.2-1.4m (4ft-4.5ft) thanks to continued Southern Hemisphere storm activity, the wind blows from the SW/W quadrant much of the time, chopping up the faces and making conditions messy. Ideal surf wind is scarce during these months, at only 22-23% of the time. However, when tropical cyclones or sharp cold fronts align with an offshore NE breeze, Quepos can light up with powerful, long-period waves - you just have to be patient and opportunistic.
