Average wave heights consistently exceed 2.5m, with periods often exceeding 12 seconds—classifying as powerful to very powerful. However, the dominant wind pattern is a double-edged sword: frequent low-pressure systems bring strong northerly winds (onshore and bad for wave quality), but when a stable high-pressure ridge settles over the Bay of Biscay, it pumps a light to moderate S to SSW flow, producing offshore conditions. The NAO index tends to be positive, steering storms well north, but a negative NAO can park the Azores High further south, allowing larger, cleaner swells. Ideal wind occurs 23-27% of the time, making these months the prime window for pumping and firing surf.

Fair Surf Season (April, May, September)

As the North Atlantic storm track weakens, average swell heights drop to the 1.7-2.1m range, with periods around 10-11 seconds—still fun and rippable. The swell direction remains predominantly NW and NNW, but the frequency of strong, long-period groundswell diminishes. Wind patterns become more erratic: northerly flow remains common, but the south-to-southwest offshore winds occur about 19-20% of the time. September often benefits from lingering summer warmth and early autumn lows, while April and May see the transition toward summer. These months offer decent waves on a good day, but consistency drops.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer brings a dramatic drop in surf quality. Average swell heights hover around 1.5m, with periods falling to 8.6-9.0 seconds—characterized as average and punchy at best, often choppy and messy. The dominant swell directions shift to NNW and NW, but these are mostly short-period windswell generated by the persistent north and NNW winds that blow offshore? Actually, these winds are onshore for Cova da Alfarroba, ruining wave shape. Ideal offshore flow from the S-SSW is scarce, happening only 9-16% of the time.
