Playa Mar Verde seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - February)

Playa Mar Verde's surf window opens in November when the North Atlantic subtropical high builds back across the western Atlantic and cold fronts start reaching the tropics. Offshore wind is ideal 51% of the time in November and rises to 59% in December before settling at 54% and 53% in January and February. Average swell heights sit at a consistent 0.7-0.8m (2.3-2.6ft) with periods in the 6.1-6.7s range, so the surf is small but clean. The E/ESE trade-wind swell still dominates, but the N/NNE offshore flow keeps the south-facing beach tidy. This is the heart of the season for groomed, rideable waves in warm water.

Fair Surf Season (March - August)

From March through August, the subtropical high drifts north and the local wind field becomes less consistent. The ideal-wind percentage drops to 38-45 percent during spring before settling near 43-50 percent in summer as tropical waves roll through. Average wave heights hold at 0.7-0.8m (2.3-2.6ft), but the overall quality is more variable because SE and SSE onshore flow becomes more frequent. June and July actually produce the longest average periods of the year at 7.4-7.5s, and any passing tropical system can send a short burst of plus-sized SE/S swell. Still, the everyday conditions are grovelly and best handled with a high-performance shortboard.

Low Surf Season (September - October)

September and October are the statistical low point of the year. Average swell height drops to 0.6m (2.0ft), periods shrink to 6.1-6.6s, and ideal wind falls to only 29-30 percent. This is the wettest and most humid part of the year, especially October, when rainfall averages 2.57 mm/day. Onshore SE-S winds keep the beach small and bumpy for weeks at a time. The wildcard is hurricane season: if a cyclone tracks through the Caribbean, Playa Mar Verde can light up with serious swell, but the day-to-day climatology is about as grovelly and marginal as it gets.
