Bunkers seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic storm track is the engine for Bunkers' best surf. From October through March, the Icelandic Low intensifies and a steady conveyor of extratropical cyclones pushes across the North Sea, generating average swells of 6-7ft (1.8-2.1m) with punchy 7-7.5s periods. The beach's West-North-West orientation lines up perfectly with the dominant W/WNW/NW swell window, and although onshore winds are common, the strongest low-pressure systems are often followed by hard offshore winds from O/OSO/SO/SSO (east through south-southeast) that groom the faces into clean, hollow lines. Water temps drop to 3.5-6.2°C, so thick suits, hoods and booties are essential.

Fair Surf Season (April - May & September)

The shoulder months are a compromise. The Atlantic still delivers a respectable mix of WNW/NW swell, especially in April and May when that direction sector accounts for 43-50% of all waves, but average heights fall to 3-5ft (1.1-1.5m) and periods hover around 6-6.6s. Onshore winds are less brutal in April and September, and offshore wind frequencies climb back to 19%, so there are more clean, rippable days for smaller-wave equipment. Look for spring and autumn cold fronts to deliver brief pulses of proper size.

Low Surf Season (June - August)

Summer is the doldrums at Bunkers. The Atlantic storm track retreats towards Iceland and the Azores High builds over Europe, leaving the North Sea under weak pressure gradients and sea breezes. Average swell heights sit at 4ft (1.2m) with periods of 5.8-6.1s, and the dominant WNW/NW swells are more often than not blown out by strong W/WNW winds that blow over 40% of the time. Offshore east-to-south-southeast winds drop to just 14% of the time, so genuinely clean surf is rare. Water temp peaks at 17-18°C, but the small, bumpy waves will have you checking the forecast for a distant late-summer hurricane or early autumn front.
