Today's Surf Conditions at Coco Pipe
Spot Overview & Description
Coco Pipe sits on the Encuentro stretch as a raw, uncompromising reef break that draws only the most seasoned surfers. This isn’t a spot for the timid—expect heavy, fast-moving waves with steep drops and hollow barrels that demand expert-level reflexes and wave-reading skills. The trade-off for the challenge is typically smaller crowds, as most paddlers know to steer clear unless they’re ready for a serious session. Best waves arrive with a north swell, though northeast pulses can also deliver. The break lights up when swell pushes around 4 feet (1.2 meters) over a shallow, uneven reef, spitting both lefts and rights with plenty of tube time. For the cleanest shape, aim for low to mid tide and a southwest wind—these conditions groom the face and keep the takeoff zone manageable. Consistency isn’t as reliable as other Encuentro spots, but when it’s on, the quality is unmatched. Notably, Coco Pipe is the only wave in the Encuentro zone where stand-up paddleboarding is permitted. If you’re confident in your abilities and craving a no-frills, heavy-water experience, this break delivers a serious dose of adrenaline.
Best Surf Season & Climatology
Best Surf Season (November - March)
Coco Pipe faces north-northeast, and its best surf arrives with the active North Atlantic storm track. From November through March, winter lows and cold fronts sweeping off the U.S. East Coast generate persistent N, NNE, NE and ENE groundswell. Average surf heights hold around 5ft (1.5-1.6m) and average periods sit at 9.3-9.4s, with 80-90% of all swell energy arriving from the favourable directions. These months deliver the most consistent head-high to overhead waves and the best chance of powerful long-period pulses. The east and east-southeast trade winds are still the daily norm, but the size and direction quality are strong enough to overcome the surface texture. Early mornings are often cleanest, and any S/SW offshore wind behind a cold front makes the spot fire.
