La Puntilla seasonal overview
Best Surf Season (November - March)
La Puntilla is a winter-driven wave magnet. As the North Atlantic storm track accelerates toward winter, average swell heights jump to around 5ft (1.5-1.6m) and periods hover around 9.3-9.4s, placing the surf right on the cusp of the powerful 10s class. The dominant swell directions are NNE, NE and ENE, with ENE alone accounting for over a third of the wave energy. These are the months when cold-frontal lows and strong high-pressure cells manufacture consistent groundswell aimed at the island's northeast-facing shore. The trade-wind machine still runs E/ESE most of the time, but the frequency of light offshore SSW/SW/WSW/W winds increases, and when those windows align with a 10s+ pulse, La Puntilla turns on with punchy, rippable surf in the 5-8ft (1.5-2.5m) range.
Fair Surf Season (April and October)
April and October act as transition months. April still sees plenty of ENE/NE swell, but average heights ease to around 4ft (1.3m) and periods shorten to 8.9s as the storm track lifts north. October is the more promising shoulder month: average size is similar at around 4ft (1.2m), yet the period rebounds to 9.1s and ideal winds reach their yearly maximum at 14%. In both months, a well-timed late-season hurricane or early-season frontal system can deliver above-average surf, but consistency is not yet on winter's level.
Low Surf Season (May - September)
Summer is a battle against the Trades. The Atlantic High settles in and pumps relentless E/ESE winds at 10-20kph, leaving La Puntilla with short-period, groveling conditions. Average swell heights drop to 3.5-4ft (1.1-1.2m) and periods shrink to 7.2-8.8s. The directional spectrum narrows to a dominant E/ENE pattern, which still lines up with the beach, but the onshore/cross-onshore flow ruins the wave shape. Ideal wind percentages bottom out in July at just 2%. September is the first sign of recovery as the tropical Atlantic stirs and longer-period pulses become more frequent, but the true return to form waits for November.
