Sosua seasonal overview

Best Surf Season (November - March)

The North Atlantic storm machine begins to roar during November, and Sosua's north-facing coastline feels it immediately. Average swell heights climb back to around 5ft (1.5m), periods firm up into the 9.3-9.4s range, and a healthy percentage of N/NNE/NNW energy mixes into the normally ENE-dominant trade swell. When cold fronts and low-pressure systems spin up off the U.S. East Coast, long-period N/NNE swell drives straight into the beach, delivering powerful 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) waves under light S/SW offshore winds. A negative NAO phase can plant the storm track further south and add even more direct north pulses. Water temperatures hold warm at 26-27C, so a spring suit and a dawn check are all you need.

Fair Surf Season (October and April)

October and April are classic shoulder months. October has some of the best wind percentages of the year - often above 55% favorable - and average periods already push back toward 9s, but the swell size has not fully caught up. April still carries average heights near 4.3ft (1.3m) and periods near 9s, but the N/NNE source has weakened and E/ENE trade swell becomes more dominant. Both months reward flexible surfers: catch them on the right transition and you can score clean, punchy waves that feel far better than the seasonal averages suggest.

Low Surf Season (May - September)

From May through September, the North Atlantic extra-tropical storm track goes quiet and the Caribbean trade winds take over. Average heights slump to 3-4ft (0.9-1.2m), periods drop into the 7-8s zone, and the overwhelming majority of wave energy arrives from E/ENE directions that are partly shadowed at this north-facing beach. The lack of N/NNE/NW groundswell means long, open-ocean walls are rare. However, the trade-wind regime keeps the morning glass-off alive, with ideal wind windows often reaching 45-58%, and passing tropical waves or hurricanes can still throw in a 4-6ft (1.2-1.8m) wildcard from late August into September.
