The North Atlantic flexes its muscles during these months, delivering a steady diet of powerful, long-period groundswells that march straight into Essaouira's west-facing coastline. Average swell heights hover around the 2.0 to 2.3m mark with periods frequently exceeding 12 seconds, thanks to a climatological peak in extratropical cyclone activity across the North Atlantic. Low-pressure systems spinning off Greenland and the Icelandic Low send pulses of NW to WNW swell our way, which find the bay perfectly exposed. Offshore winds from the ENE to SE quadrant blow cleanly over 40-50% of the time, often backed by a strong Azores High that sets up a classic Moroccan winter pattern: cold fronts slide through, then high pressure rebuilds from the east, producing glassy mornings and groomed, hollow lines. This is the heart of the season for solid, rippable surf at Essaouira.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transitional months offer a mix of lingering winter energy and summer lulls. April still sees an average swell of 2.0m, though the period drops to around 10.8 seconds as the storm track begins to weaken. Swell direction shifts slightly more northerly, with NNW pulses dominating. The trade wind regime becomes more active, and the percentage of ideal offshore wind slips to about 25%, meaning you'll have to pick your windows carefully. September marks the early return of Atlantic storm activity, with average swell heights climbing back to 1.6m and periods stretching to 10 seconds. The wind is ideal about 37% of the time, often during morning hours before the afternoon sea breeze kicks in. Both months can deliver fun, clean waves when a tropical disturbance or early-season low aligns with a favorable wind corridor.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer brings a dramatic shift as the North Atlantic storm track retreats and the Azores High builds strongly to the north. Swell becomes predominantly short-period, northerly windswell generated by the relentless trade winds. Average wave heights sit around 1.6 to 1.7m, but periods often drop below 9 seconds, resulting in weaker, more disorganized surf. The thermal low over the Sahara intensifies the pressure gradient, funneling strong NNE to NE winds across the coast. These winds are mostly cross-shore or onshore for the west-facing lineup, with ideal offshore conditions occurring only 17-23% of the time. The best bet during these months is to chase early morning windows before the wind cranks up, or hope for a rare tropical swell to sneak in from the south – but overall, this is the time to appreciate Essaouira's charm on land rather than in the water.
