But when those winds take a breather, the sea reveals its gentler side, offering a handful of sand-bottom breaks that peel both left and right. The magic happens with southwest or north swell, starting as small as 1 foot, making it a playground for intermediate surfers in search of mellow, user-friendly rides. For prime conditions, line up an east wind and target low to mid or high tide. While consistency isn't Essaouira's strong suit, when the planets align, the waves roll in with a forgiving rhythm, perfect for honing your craft and soaking in the vibrant local vibe. Best Surf Season (October - March)

Essaouira's west-facing coastline sits squarely in the firing line of North Atlantic winter storms, and from October through March the region sees the most consistent combination of size, period and clean offshore wind. Average wave heights hover around 1.8-2.3m (6-7.5ft) and average periods climb into the powerful 11-13 second band, with the bulk of the energy arriving as long-period WNW and NW groundswell. When the Azores High relaxes and Atlantic lows push farther south - especially during negative phases of the NAO - the Moroccan coast gets hit by multiple-day windows of pumping, well-ordered waves. The prevailing continental flow from the east and southeast adds an offshore component that keeps the faces clean and hollow, making this the clear go-to season for serious sessions.
