Best Surf Season (October - March)

The North Atlantic fires on all cylinders during these months, delivering consistent, long-period groundswells from the north and northwest quadrants. The average swell height sits between 1.5m and 1.9m with periods often exceeding 10 seconds, producing powerful, well-defined lines that wrap into Faja dos Cubres. The catch? Offshore winds from the south and southwest are relatively rare, clocking in at only 10-13% of the time. However, when a strong high-pressure system sets up over the Bay of Biscay or a low-pressure system tracks south of the Azores, we see light southerly flow that turns the normally wind-affected beach into a glassy, peeling playground. The window for perfect conditions is narrow, but when it aligns, the reward is epic, pumping surf.

Fair Surf Season (April & September)

These transition months offer a blend of improving swell consistency and more frequent offshore wind windows. April sees average swell height drop to 1.5m with a period of 9.4s, while September picks back up from the summer lull to 1.1m and 9.2s. The swell direction shifts more towards the north-northeast and northwest, still favorable for the beach. Offshore wind percentages climb to 12-20%, meaning more clean sessions are on the cards compared to deep winter. The trade-off: swells are less consistent and often shorter in period, but the increased chance of clean conditions makes for fun, rippable waves when the wind plays ball.

Low Surf Season (May - August)

Summer settles in with a dramatic drop in swell activity. Average heights range from 0.8m to 1.2m, and periods hover around 8.5 seconds, producing weak, short-period windswell rather than powerful groundswell. The dominant swell directions become highly variable, with a lot of small, low-energy waves from the east and southeast that do little for the north-facing beach. On the bright side, offshore winds from the south and southwest reach their peak frequency, blowing 15-22% of the time. But without a solid swell underneath, those glassy conditions often mean small, groveling waves. It's not the place to be for serious waves, but on a rare longer-period north swell with southerly winds, you can still find fun-sized surf.
